All airborne equipment must pass RTCA DO-160G conformance testing before being allowed to fly on commercial aircraft in many countries around the world (and MIL-STD-461G for military aircraft). It is very expensive for aircraft equipment manufacturers to engage an accredited or certified test house to officially perform these tests, or to conduct in-house. If the test then fails, it must eventually be repeated at additional expense.
The XF-160GL3 allows a confidence check to be performed by generating the worst-case waveform (double exponential). This low-cost equipment allows the design engineer to have great confidence that DO-160G section 22 and MIL-STD-461G conformance will be achieved in certified testing. Furthermore, it can also be used to functionally check the lightning protection of in-service equipment. Typical application examples of use are given in the user guide.
